House will not override IL governor’s veto of tax increase plan

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The Latest on the Illinois Legislature’s action to address the nation’s longest state budget stalemate (all times local):

Speaker Michael Madigan says the House does not plan an override vote Tuesday if Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoes the budget package sent to him.

The Senate voted earlier in the day to approve a $5 billion tax increase to fund a $36 billion budget plan. It would be the first in Illinois in more than two years because of a budget standoff between Rauner and Democrats.

Rauner promised to veto the budget package because it doesn’t have include the business reform and property tax relief he demands.

The Senate is prepared to vote on an override motion Tuesday, but Madigan told WICS-TV that there would be no House action Tuesday.

Thunderstorm chances still out there the next couple of days

Happy 4th everyone!!

Typical summer weather continues with the warm and humid air expected to set off an isolated coverage of showers and thunderstorms as we head into the evening hours.

We’ll keep it pretty warm and humid again tonight as any isolated shower or thunderstorm out there would have diminished.   Lows overnight will only drop in the upper 60s.

More of the same come Wednesday and Thursday with a later day shower or thunderstorm each day.   The better coverage of the two days will be on Thursday as an approaching cold front moves in.

Temperatures both days will climb between 85 and 90 degrees before we spill in more tolerable warmth and lower humidity heading into the following weekend.

Moline neighborhood parade continues years of tradition

MOLINE - There's a parade on 25th Avenue Ct. and 12th Street in Moline that's been a tradition for years.

"I cant think of a year that I missed," said George Sukach, resident.

Sukach said he's watched the parade every year since 1975.

"It's just been a close knit street, very loving street, people should love to live on this street," said Sukach.

The Moline Fire Department leads the way in this parade that's filled with the neighborhood kids and families.

"It's really a grass roots parade, it's great," said Mike Maynard, retired Moline firefighter.

For the neighborhood the 4th of July means so much more to them than just a parade.

"It's really back to what it was all about when it started," said Maynard.

For them it's a time to come together as Americans and show pride for the country they live in.

BBQ Alert Issued: Good Morning Quad Cities Team Tests Out Hot Dog Grilling Hack

Happy Independence Day!

4th of July is probably the most patriotic day of the year, but it's also the most popular hot dog day of the year. According to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, more than 150 million hot dogs are eaten today alone.

We, on Good Morning Quad Cites, decided to do our part and eat eight of those. Eric issued a BBQ Alert at 5:30am and by 6am, we were outside preparing the grill with hot dogs on skewers. Why? See below.

Since Eric grilled, Angie made dessert - a 4th of July flag made out of edible cookie dough and patriotic M&Ms! If you want the recipe, click here.

Grilling with Fareway: Chicken Marinade for 4th of July

Ditch the hot dogs and hamburgers for 4th of July. Fareway's meat manager Darin Lastine shows us how to make a Chicken Marinade.

Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 Tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tsp dry mustard
  • 3/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 3/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 4 lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts
Directions:

Place trimmed chicken breasts in large Ziploc baggie or large container.

Combine all ingredients and pour over the chicken. Marinate for 6-12 hours.

When you're ready for the meal, cut the chicken into strips and pop it on the grill at medium heat.  Grill them for about 15 minutes, but check the internal temperature for 165 degrees, so you know they are safe to eat.

One hurt in shooting in Davenport

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Davenport Police say one person was shot in an incident Monday July 3, 2017. Officers responded to a call in the 1300 block of Sturdevant Street around 3pm.

Police say the victim is being treated for injuries but is expected to make a full recovery. Investigators say they are checking surveillance cameras on nearby Washington Street for any clues that can help them. No arrests have been made.

Illinois residents react to proposed tax hike bill

MOLINE - On Sunday the Illinois House voted to increase income taxes by 32 percent.

The tax legislation increases the personal income tax rate from 3.75 percent to just under 5 percent. Corporations would pay 7 percent instead of 5.25 percent.

"I think the tax increase is quite okay, as long as we know the money's gonna be used for what it's being raised for," said Diane Stokeld, Moline resident.

Some residents said that the tax hike is a lot of money to pay and fear that history will repeat itself.

"The last one that passed number of years ago, the Chicago Tribune said in less than a year the spending went up the same amount, so what good will it do, "said Jim, resident.

Other Illinois residents understand why a tax increase would help but also see the impact it can have on those already struggling.

"If it has to be taxes raised to get this back on track then I think it's okay but I feel for those that are gonna have difficulty paying those taxes," said Catherine Anderson, resident.

Overall, people in Illinois said they want a solution, fast.

"I'd like to see Illinois get back on track again and we've got so many people that are losing out on so many vital things," said Anderson.

"It's just a shame what they have done to demolish something that has everything you could possibly want," said Stokeld.

Governor Bruce Rauner has already promised to veto the bill.

Storms will diminish late Monday night, but may flare up for the 4th

Hope everyone has had a great holiday weekend so far! We had some strong storms right along I-80 this afternoon, and they’ll slowly move to the southeast this evening. The good news is that I expect the rain to really weaken after the sunset tonight. Red White and Boom looks dry for now, but it’s still not a bad idea to have an umbrella just in case. It will be a bit muggy tonight with lows in the mid 60s.

However, the same stalled front causing these storms on Monday will reignite a few more storms for our holiday. The 4th of July will start off dry, but the rain will develop late that afternoon and evening. I’m seeing the greatest chance for rain along and south of I-80. No surprise, it will be warm and humid again with highs in the mid 80s. Overnight lows will be in the upper 60s.

We have a better chance for more widespread showers and storms on Wednesday, but the rain will keep us in the lower 80s.

Full on sunshine returns for Thursday, and the heat will really crank up! We’re likely to see highs in the upper 80s and low 90s.

Authorities did not say how they knew each other or their relation. The sheriff’s office says the plane left from Chicago and was heading to Canada on a fishing trip.

The investigation is ongoing.

Venus Williams left tearful by car crash questions

(CNN) — Facing questions from the media at Wimbledon about her involvement in a fatal car accident, a tearful Venus Williams says what has happened has been ‘devastating.”

The 37-year-old Williams comfortably beat Belgian No. 1 Elise Mertens on Court 1 Monday — winning 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 — but was lost for words when asked about the crash.

A police report says that Venus Williams is responsible for the car accident earlier this month in Florida, which caused injuries to a 78-year-old man who later died.

The Palm Beach Gardens Police report states the accident occurred on June 9 in Palm Beach Gardens and the victim, Jerome Barson, was a passenger in a car that was driven by his wife, Linda Barson.

The victim’s family has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Williams, alleging negligence.

After beating Mertens, Williams was repeatedly asked about the incident by the media and eventually became so emotional she began to cry.

“There are really no words to describe, like, how devastating and — yeah. I’m completely speechless. It’s just …” Williams said.

The five-time Wimbledon singles champion held her head for several moments and asked to leave the room before returning, still visibly shaken, to finish the interview session several minutes later.

Enjoy that road trip! July 4th gas hasn’t been this cheap in years

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Drivers are enjoying the cheapest Fourth of July gasoline in more than a decade. Enjoy it while it lasts: Experts say prices will start inching higher soon.

The average price nationwide for a gallon of regular is $2.23, down 15 cents from a month ago, according to AAA. The last time gas was this cheap heading into Independence Day was 2005.

But wholesale gasoline prices have already started to climb up, and that will probably translate into modestly higher prices at the pump in coming days, said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst for the Oil Price Information Service, which tracks gas prices for AAA.

“I think today’s number might be about as low as it gets this summer,” Kloza told CNNMoney.

The price of crude oil has started to creep up as U.S. oil production has declined recently, he said. But demand will stay strong. “From now to Labor Day, there’s no question we’ll use plenty of fuel,” Kloza said.

Those factors should combine to send prices up about 10 cents a gallon, Kloza said. The price will probably then drop again come fall, when gas stations stop selling the more expensive blend of gasoline required during the summer months to fight smog.

Meanwhile, Indiana, Montana, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia raised state gasoline taxes on July 1.

South Carolina still has the cheapest average gas price in the country at $1.90 a gallon, despite a two-cent increase in gas taxes.

Spieth to sit out John Deere Classic again

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Jordan Spieth has decided to skip the John Deere Classic to prepare for the British Open.

Spieth is a two-time winner of the tournament. He won the John Deere Classic in 2013 on a sponsor’s exemption, which sent him to the FedEx Cup playoffs and a spot on the Presidents Cup team at age 19. He won again in 2015, even though it meant not getting to the British Open until Monday when he was going after the third leg of the Grand Slam.

He did not defend his title at the TPC Deere Run last year. The tournament was the same week as the Olympics, and when Spieth joined other top stars in not going to Rio de Janeiro, he felt it would be disrespectful to play anywhere else that week.

The John Deere Classic is July 13-16. The British Open at Royal Birkdale is the following week.

“I love the tournament, I love the golf course and, more importantly, I love the people,” Spieth said. “While my schedule doesn’t permit me returning to the Quad Cities this year, I plan to be back in the future.”

Spieth has two victories this year, most recently the Travelers Championship, which he added to his schedule as part of a new PGA Tour policy that players add one tournament they haven’t played in the last four years.

Suspect tracked down within 40 minutes of reported burglary in Des Moines County

BURLINGTON, Iowa — A suspect was tracked down within an hour after a burglary was reported at an apartment building.

A burglary was reported in progress on Sunday, July 2nd around 11:20 a.m., according to a statement from the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office.  When deputies arrived the suspect had already fled.

From talking to witnesses at the scene, investigators found out that “the suspect had forced entry into the residence and assaulted the occupant while armed with a firearm,” the statement read.  At some point during the incident, the weapon was fired and hit a vehicle that was parked in front of the apartment.

Officers found the suspect less than 40 minutes into their investigation, according to the statement. Just before noon 28-year-old Centrel Daunta Handy was found in his vehicle in the 1400 block of Lincoln Street in Burlington.

Investigators did a search of the area, including a nearby building, and found “parts to the handguns, ammunition, and clothing used by Handy in the commission of the crime,” read the statement.

Handy was arrested for first degree burglary and possession of a firearm by a felon, the statement said.  Handy was taken to the Des Moines County Correctional Center and was held without bond.

Police said the person who was assaulted in the incident was treated at the scene for injuries.
